OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, an age-gated experience for users 13 to 17 with parental controls,
content restrictions, and identity-based age verification, years after teenagers had already been
using the standard product.

## What's different for teens

Users placed in the under-18 experience get restrictions around content covering suicide, self-harm,
and romantic or sexual roleplay, and the model is barred from using romantic language or terms of
endearment with teen users, according to
[OpenAI's own announcement, reported by TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/18/openai-launches-a-safer-chatgpt-for-teens-years-after-teens-started-using-it/).
OpenAI says it's also more strongly instructing the model not to suggest it has feelings,
consciousness, or emotions, aiming to reduce anthropomorphism and emotional dependence.

## The tools

A "Study Mode" generates homework reminders, quizzes, and learning visualizations. Parents can set
"Quiet Hours" during which the chatbot becomes unavailable. Users who are incorrectly placed in the
teen experience can verify their age using Persona, a third-party identity verification service.

## Why it matters

The "years after teens started using it" framing several outlets used isn't incidental: this launches
into a product millions of teenagers already use daily, not a fresh rollout to a new audience, which
changes what "safety feature" actually has to mean here, retrofitting guardrails onto existing habits
rather than building them in from a blank slate. The specific restriction on romantic language and
emotional-attachment framing points at a concern regulators and researchers have raised repeatedly
this year: chatbots forming what reads like an emotionally intimate relationship with a minor user.
Whether age verification through Persona proves difficult to circumvent is the practical question that
determines whether any of this actually works as intended.

What to watch: independent testing of how easily a teen could bypass the Persona age-verification step.
